The Teaching: From the Law of Attraction to Natural Law

From the pop "Your Wish Is Your Command" frequency teaching to the deeper Natural Law — Care, the two spiritual currencies, and what to honestly make of it all.

The pop version: your mind broadcasts a frequency

The popular teaching begins with one claim: the human brain is the strongest transmitter and receiver of frequency on the planet. Every thought broadcasts a signal — and the world reflects it back. Its title image is Aladdin's genie who answers "Your wish is my command" — except the genie is your own mind, and you command it by deciding clearly what you want.

It is dressed up with the names of Edison and Einstein and the language of radio waves through steel and stone. Take the physics loosely: the working idea is that attention and feeling behave like a signal you are always sending, whether you mean to or not.

“The Genie always says one thing: "Your wish is my command."”
— The Secret (Rhonda Byrne)

What you broadcast returns to you

If the mind transmits a frequency, the Law of Attraction is the rule for what comes back: like attracts like. Whatever you dwell on with attention and emotion, you tend to draw more of — the teaching calls it "a higher law than gravity".

This is the engine of The Secret and the Abraham-Hicks material: you are a vibrational being in a vibrational field, and matching frequencies bond. Practically, it is an instruction to manage where your attention lives.

“That which is like unto itself is drawn.”
— Abraham-Hicks

The honest critique: it is not magic

The term "Law of Attraction" is not ancient. It was coined in 1906 by the New Thought writer William Walker Atkinson in Thought Vibration, and popularised a century later by The Secret. Critics rightly point out that "think positive and the universe pays out" can shade into wishful thinking that ignores effort, risk and reality.

So hold the strong version lightly. What survives scrutiny is modest but real: attention is selective, expectation shapes what you notice and pursue, and mood colours the chances you take. That is enough to be worth practising — without pretending it suspends cause and effect.

“Belief in The Secret's claims… preys on a desire for quick fixes and easy solutions.”
— The Alchemy of Awareness

The deeper version: Natural Law

Strip away the marketing and the same seven principles sit underneath — the Hermetic principles of the Kybalion, here called the principles of Natural Law: Mentalism, Correspondence, Vibration, Polarity, Rhythm, Cause & Effect, and Gender. They are descriptive claims about how mind and world behave, not a vending machine for wishes.

The crucial difference is Cause & Effect read as consequentialism: you are free to act, but not free of the results. This is the grown-up version of "attraction" — not "ask and receive", but "every cause carries its effect, on every plane".

“There is no free will to ignore law without consequence; that is the limit of free will.”
— Natural Law (Mark Passio)

Care, and the two spiritual currencies

Natural Law adds an 8th "lost" principle the pop version never mentions: Care — the generative principle that binds the other seven. Care is simply whatever you give your attention to and help to grow. What you care about becomes what you think about, and therefore how you behave and what you create.

It spends through two "spiritual currencies": time and attention (you "spend time" and "pay attention"). The honest reframe of manifestation is this — stop asking what you want, and look at what you actually give your time and attention to. That is what is being created.

“That which we care enough about to put our will behind is ultimately what gets created in our world.”
— Natural Law (Mark Passio)

The four foundations

Before any of it works, the teaching asks four questions of the student: Whom should you listen to? What is your ability to learn right now? What is your will to learn? And what is your will to accept change?

These are the honest part. No frequency talk changes anything unless you take advice from sound sources and are willing to change your own patterns, beliefs and thinking.

“You must change some of your behaviours, patterns and beliefs — but also your way of thinking.”
— Your Wish Is Your Command

Where it came from

None of this fell from the sky. The modern teaching is a traceable lineage of New Thought writers — each repackaging the one before for a new audience.

  1. 1906Thought Vibration· William W. Atkinson

Coins the phrase “the Law of Attraction in the thought world”.

  2. 1908The Kybalion· Three Initiates

Repackages the 7 Hermetic principles for a modern audience.

  3. 1910The Science of Getting Rich· Wallace D. Wattles

The direct source of The Secret: “give more in use value than you take”.

  4. 1937Think and Grow Rich· Napoleon Hill

Turns it into a success system — desire, faith, the mastermind.

  5. 2006The Secret· Rhonda Byrne

Book + film make the Law of Attraction a global phenomenon.

A mirror, not physics. The "frequencies" and famous-scientist quotes here are the language of a self-help and spiritual tradition, not established science. What survives skepticism is modest but real: where you place attention and emotion shapes what you notice, pursue and act on. Use it that way.
